At People Need People, every initiative begins with listening. We bring together residents, community partners, and organizations to identify needs, share ideas, and create solutions that strengthen the Virgin Islands. By working together, we're building opportunities, preserving our culture, and creating lasting impact—one initiative at a time.

The St. John Battery Alliance

Pilot Program

Powering Peace of Mind. Strengthening Community.

The Battery Alliance is a collaborative pilot program created to improve emergency preparedness for residents who depend on electricity for life-sustaining medical equipment and refrigerated medications.

The initiative began when St. John Rescue invited local organizations to come together to explore solutions for one of our community's most pressing challenges: ensuring vulnerable residents have access to reliable backup power during outages.

People Need People proudly joined this coalition, believing that the strongest solutions are built through collaboration.

As partners met each week to research, plan, and coordinate, a shared priority emerged. While existing programs offered valuable support, medically vulnerable residents on St. John often faced unique challenges. As the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John can be among the last communities to receive resources during emergencies. The coalition recognized the need for a local, coordinated approach that could help bridge those gaps.

Working alongside community partners—including Love City Strong and the Virgin Islands Energy Office (VIEO)—the coalition developed the Battery Alliance Pilot Program to help address the needs of residents who are medically reliant on electricity and may not qualify for, or have immediate access to, existing assistance programs. Together, these efforts help strengthen energy resilience across our community.

Today, the pilot program has already delivered 10 backup battery systems, providing greater peace of mind for residents and their families while helping strengthen the island's emergency preparedness.

This is only the beginning.

As a pilot program, the Battery Alliance is laying the foundation for a broader community effort—one that continues to grow through partnership, innovation, and a shared commitment to ensuring no one is left behind when emergencies arise.

Our Impact So Far

  • 10 backup battery systems delivered

  • Collaborative partnership among local nonprofits, community organizations, and government

  • Supporting medically vulnerable residents during power outages

  • Building a scalable model for future expansion

Looking Ahead

The Battery Alliance Pilot Program represents what's possible when organizations come together with a shared purpose. As we evaluate its impact and continue building partnerships, our goal is to expand this effort and strengthen resilience across our community—because when people ork together, everyone benefits.

The Battery Alliance is designed to complement—not replace—existing community resources. Whenever possible, we connect residents with the programs and services that best meet their needs while working collaboratively to fill gaps where they exist.

Looking for Additional Assistance?

The Battery Alliance encourages residents to explore the programs offered by the Virgin Islands Energy Office (VIEO). Through its Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), eligible elderly, disabled, and low-income households may receive energy-efficient home improvements and appliance upgrades designed to reduce electricity consumption and lower utility costs. Eligibility is based on several factors, including household income and other qualifying criteria.

If you or a family member may be eligible, we encourage you to learn more and apply.

Our First Conversation Starts with You.

For months, we've dreamed about creating a space where people from every corner of our community could come together—not to debate, but to listen. Not to divide, but to connect.

Now, that vision is becoming a reality.

People Need People is excited to invite you to the very first Community Voices—our inaugural community conversation and the beginning of what we hope becomes a lasting tradition throughout the Virgin Islands.

This isn't a lecture. It isn't a town hall. And it's not about having all the answers.

It's about creating a welcoming space where neighbors can share ideas, celebrate what makes our islands special, discuss the opportunities and challenges we face, and imagine what's possible when we work together.

Whether you've lived here your entire life or recently made these islands your home, your experiences, your perspective, and your voice matter.

Before launching new programs or creating solutions, we believe it's important to hear directly from the people who know our community best. Community Voices is where those conversations begin.

As our very first event, we're not just introducing People Need People—we're beginning a conversation that we hope will inspire new friendships, meaningful partnerships, future initiatives, and lasting positive change for generations to come.

Because every great community begins with people who are willing to listen.

And at People Need People, we believe there will always be a seat for you at the table.
